When looking at the work of the Czech photographer Jitka Hanzlová, the initial challenge lies in relating it to the statement that she made to me in her house in Essen last year and which appears at the start of this essay below the quotations from Julio Cortazar and Milan Kundera.
In my opinion all her series are portraits. Experienced and analysed from that viewpoint, all those looks and expressions, shot in vertical format in distant parts of the world, reflect her statement and have a bearing on the relationship of the individual with the context in which that person lives.
